Costa Blanca, which means "white coast" stretches from Denia in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, and then inland from Orihuela to the valleys of Marina Alta. The area has one of Europe's best climates with around 300 days of sunshine each year.
The World Health Organisation has declared the area as being one of the healthiest places in the world to live.
TORREVIEJA
The area around Torrevieja is famous for its production of salt. If you drive along the N332 from Alicante towards Torrevieja you will have wonderful views of the salt lakes and mountains of salt nearby. Keep a look out for the Flamingos and other birds that are in abundance here.
The excellent year round weather, low humidity along with the health giving properties of the salt lakes, make it an ideal area for sufferers of arthiritus, rhuematism, skin and respiratory conditions.
Torrevieja town has an abundance of shops, restaurants and tapas bars. The Habaneras shopping mall is just outside of the town near Carreforre.
Torrevieja marina is a lovely place to sit with a drink and dream that you own one of the beautiful yachts in the harbour.
Take a walk along Torrevieja sea front and visit the night market stalls to pick up a bargain.
Pop in to the tourist office and pick up some discount vouchers that are often available for Mundomar, Aqualandia and other local attractions. Also ask about fiestas and parades that might be happening during your holiday, (they are never well advertised).
5th January is the parade of the Three Kings, held in the early evening. The Kings throw sweets to the children so remember to take your carrier bags for the children to collect sweets.
Mid February is Mardi Gras time. This is a fantastic carnival of fabulous costumes and floats, that goes on and on and on. We left at midnight last year and it was still going on. Don't miss this one if you are here then.
BEACHES
There are numerous sandy beaches along this coast. Many have "blue flag" status and play areas for the children.
To the north of Torrevieja are the beaches of La Mata and Guardamar with their long stretches of sand with dunes and backed by beautiful pine gardens. The gardens are a perfect place for a picnic if you want to get away from the sand for a while.
To the south of Torrevieja you will find lovely sandy coves. The beaches in this area are Mar Azul, Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Campoamor and Torre de Horadada. A short drive further along the coast will bring you to the beautiful Mar Menor.
MUD BATHS AT LO PAGAN
The Mar Menor is a large inlet of warm salt water and clay measuring 170 square Klms. The mud baths can be found at Lo Pagan, south of Torrevieja close to San Pedro del Pinatar. Here you will find a long walkway that projects out into the Mar Menor. On the left hand side of the walkway are wooden platforms that give easy access to the water. The mud from the water is said to help with rheumatism, arthritus and skin conditions. You will see people covered in the mud which should be left to dry on the skin before washing off with clean sea water. Anyone can join in but be warned...the mud has a distinctive smell...not pleasant! Next to the walkway is a safe sandy beach with shallow waters and play area for children.
Just an hour inland about 25 - 30 kms from Murcia you will find the wonderful spas of Archena and Fortuna.
The warm and healing Spanish waters of the Spas offer shear relaxation. The excellent properties of its mineral waters, rich in hydrogen sulphire bubbles and at a steady temperature of around 50 degrees, are used for healing and preventative purposes.
